This course aims to provide an overview on urban regeneration issues and activities, and to assess its physical dimension together its political, socio-cultural, organizational and economic dimensions. This course intends to increase students’ awareness on ongoing urban regeneration processes in Turkey and abroad.

 

Aim

The main objective of the course is to explain the concepts of urban regeneration and integrated urban development and to describe the specific processes, methods and instruments related to these.

This course introduces origins, challenges and purposes of urban regeneration, its partners, strategies, multiple dimensions and best practices from Turkey and the world.

 

Learning objectives

At the end of this course students should be able to

  1. develop a comprehensive understanding of the urban regeneration process, of its main principles and applied methods within different historic stages and social and economic contexts;
  2. get an adequate understanding and the capabilities to develop integrated projects and urban regeneration strategies;
  3. gain an integrative and inter-disciplinary approach for analysing urban problems in a way that reflects their complexity;
  4. acquire an understanding of the principal academic discourse relating to processes of urban development and change;
  5. prepare them for professional practice or further research activity.
